injured but not broken

for most of you who don’t know VR yet, it’s a virtual training run we do every thursday with other fellow runners all over the world at a sync time at 4am (GMT + 8). so wherever you may be, whatever time zone you’re at, don your running getto, tie your shoe laces and join us in our training runs!

unfortunately last thursday, i had a major knee injury :-( i started a bit late at 5ish after B rang my phone 3x already. weather was not perfect, it’s raining cats and dogs, but hello! i’m sooo in the mood for running that morning! did a 2km walk for warm-up then jog all the way to my jogging spot in salcedo park. time flew so quickly without me noticing it’s already 7ish and i’ve ran 15km already! wooot woot! it’s those times when running was such a breeze and you just feel good about it!

met-up with B, R & J (guest from UK). had a chat and shared a drink at a nearby convenient store and then we went home. on my way to my apartment, i know i’m tired, but there was no noticeable pain anywhere. but as soon as i’m off to my work, i felt real pain in my left knee. it was like something slipped inside. so i tried ignoring it. but that afternoon, after i visited a site for inspection, i realised that the pain is something i cant just ignore. i mean everytime i’d bend my knee, awwwww! it really hurts! immediately put ice bag on it for a cold compress, in the hope that it would alleviate the pain inside. but after 2 hours of doing it, geeez! pain hasn’t subsided even a bit.

i sms all my running friends and asked what could possibly be it. i wasn’t used to having this discomfort and i was really panicking at that instant. horrors of a serious injury scares me! big time! elllo! i have not even achieved a decent PR yet nor received a bragging right for placing somewhere between 1-10 and there i was being threatened by a serious injury! waaah :-(

my interim solutionafter had an xray the next morning, i’ve learned i had a patello femoral pain. it’s somewhere in my patella and was said to be a very common injury amongst runners, thus it’s more commonly called runner’s knee. and hearing it was like putting a dagger to my chest! it’s more painful than what i have in my left leg, seriously. when i run, it’s only then i feel hmmmm…infinite?! yeah infinite! the same infinity that charlie of perks of being a wallflower felt as they drove thru the tunnel with his 2 friends. (i recom you read this book if you haven’t). and if i don’t run even for a while especially now i just started really getting serious on my running program, i’d go nuts instantly!

if there’s one consolation though, the orthopedic doctor said, i just have to rest it, and slowly go back to light training. he stressed too that correct stretching should be done before and after run. something i am guilty of not doing. haaay.

so there since thursday, i was a home buddy.

i miss the long distance training run at the fort…my night swimming routine, FOB concert, wewilldoodle exhibit, FAME run and the san mateo trail run! (real heartbreakers to me! boo!)

yes i attended a couple of weekend parties (bridal shower and a birthday), but all were in cameo attendance. those were rather brief partying. i came late and left early. i just think it’s more important for me to have my knee get a real rest and be able to run again soon. as in soon!

so far knee is getting better, or i just think it is :-) thanks to all those peeps who earnestly expressed their care! most of you i only knew recently, but the care was overwhelming indeed. thanks to you guys! you know who you are! ;-)

i am positive to be able to do a light run next VR and feel again the morning breeze against my face…and feel infinite once more! :-) woohoo!

hey hey hey! slow down bangge…. I learned that going faster and and training harder too soon will result into an injury. I know its hard pero as Mon would always do, walk first.

Don’t worry di ka nagiisa. I’m taking a week off from running too. :(

ben, i know. na-OA yata kase yung VR ko that morning eh . but i noticed h@ppy feeters are being plagued by injuries lately ah! pangasar diba? anyway cross training na lang muna tayo. swimming, tara?

No running for me too, My previous injury (Runner’s Knee also) didn’t actually subside even when I’m already wearing a knee support. I think the races i’ve had recently (NB run for it & Mizuno Wave Run) added to my ailing knee. so right now I’m giving it a rest from 2weeks to 1 month and going to the gym to x-train. I hope after recovery I still have enough time to train for the Sing Marathon. for the meantime I’ll join you and Ben for a different VR (Virtual Recovery) :).

Sorry to hear about the knee. You and Mr. Freeman have the same thing, maybe he gave it to you at VR5:) Okay but seriously I hope it feels better soon.

did some light running tuesday evening but hell, my knee went berserk so that’s what i get for pushing too hard…

cross-train i will…weights, core, light boxing, sleeping, teka kasama ba yun hehehe!

ben, next week na lang ako. i’m diving this weekend :-) my cross training, hovering, finning :-) hahaha!

benchman, it’s painful eh? i hope you too get better! i mean with your sing marathon on tow, i know how heartbreaking it is not to train. pro i really suggest swim a couple of laps regularly. that’s wot injured h@ppyfeeters will do for the meantime. and VR (virtual recovery?) – nice one!

rick, yeah i just thought about it now :-) hahaha! anyway, with or without post from the regular promotion pages (e-rod, tbr, trf, benchman & coffee mug), we keep the tradition :-) only this week we’re forced not to, due to you know, injuries of fellow VRunners. but next week if we got better, tara let’s run again and feel the breeze! :-) woot! woot!

rex, grabe noh? ang hirap ng ganito. i tried too last thursday, pro di kinaya eh. and yes let’s cross train exclude sleeping though! hahaha!

Banggi! It’s already the 30th so I hope half a week’s rest has helped a bit. Knowing you, you’ll be back on your feet in no time. But, please make sure easy easy ka lang. Don’t increase your pace or distance too quickly even if you think your body can take it. Take care! Hope to see you again soon :)

hi banggie… i am such a heel for not commenting on this post sooner. i hope that by this time your knee is much better now. give it a rest if it still hurts. unfortunately for us runners we tend to ignore pain until it is too hurt and a serious injury sidelines us for much longer than we anticipated.

as far as vrs go, i’ll probably still be out of that for a while, but i’ll certainly keep in touch.
